Testing
This means that a system is tested for acceptable use by a
blind or visually impaired person. Generally, a speech synthesizer
is used to read the screen contents. Since the user can't see,
the mouse can't be used; the tab key and arrow keys are used
to move around, with the synthesizer speaking the contents of
the objects.
So the first thing to test is the tab order; movement should
be logical, left to right, top to bottom. Are captions being
read out so the user can tell where he is? Are the contents of
text fields being read? What about text in a large text box or
rich text box? Does the reading end at every line, or does it
continue to the end, as it is supposed to?
The F1 key is often used to give context sensitive help; does
the F1 key work acceptably in this application?
When you do this kind of testing, try wearing a blindfold,
or keep your eyes closed. You will gain new respect for blind
computer users. |
